This medication is used to treat and prevent infections caused by the herpes simplex virus, including primary and recurrent genital herpes, as well as effective for the treatment of herpes zoster (shingles) virus infections, especially for alleviating acute pain. However, its effectiveness in postherpetic neuralgia has not been sufficiently proven. It can also be used for the treatment of chickenpox in children aged 2 and older. It is effectively used for the treatment and prevention of various viral infections.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

1. Treatment of herpes simplex virus infections: Administer 200 mg 5 times a day at 4-hour intervals for 5 days. Treatment may be extended for severe primary infections. 2. Kidney problems may arise, so any abnormalities in urination or the presence of hematuria or proteinuria should be reported immediately. Routine blood tests may show changes in white blood cell or platelet counts, so regular monitoring is required. If symptoms of liver dysfunction, jaundice, or hepatitis appear, immediate consultation with a physician is necessary. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may occur, and if symptoms are severe, medication should be discontinued. It is important to maintain adequate hydration during treatment to prevent dehydration and reduce stress on the kidneys. To enhance treatment efficacy, it is best to administer this drug as soon as symptoms begin, and if symptoms do not improve, other treatment options should be considered. Women who are pregnant or of childbearing potential should use this medication with caution, and breastfeeding should be discontinued if using this drug. In cases of overdose, severe symptoms such as coma, seizures, and confusion may arise, requiring immediate medical attention for proper treatment.
