Adult dose

Adult: Administer 250 mg (based on potency) of cefaclor orally every 8 hours. In cases of severe infections (such as pneumonia) and infections with low susceptibility, the dose can be doubled. For acute gonococcal urethritis, a single dose of 3 g of this drug and 1 g of probenecid are administered together.

Precautions

This drug acts by binding to specific proteins and interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis, killing the bacteria. This medication should not be used in patients who have previously experienced severe allergic reactions or shock due to this medication or other cephalosporin antibiotics. Caution should be taken when using in patients with a history of allergy to penicillin antibiotics or those who easily develop allergic symptoms such as bronchial asthma, rash, or urticaria. Patients with significantly impaired renal function, those unable to take orally, elderly patients, or those with poor general conditions may show signs of vitamin K deficiency, and therefore should be carefully monitored. Patients with gastrointestinal diseases, especially those with a history of colitis, should be cautious when using this medication. During use, rare occurrences of shock or severe allergic reactions may occur, so if symptoms appear, discontinue use immediately and seek appropriate treatment. Severe reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis may occur, so careful observation of the skin condition is necessary. Blood tests may show abnormalities such as leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, or anemia, so regular monitoring is required; if abnormalities are found, discontinue use of the drug. Symptoms of liver dysfunction or renal impairment may emerge, requiring regular monitoring of liver and kidney functions, and immediate action if abnormalities are noted. Severe colitis, such as membranous colitis, can rarely occur, so if abdominal pain or diarrhea worsens, discontinue use immediately. Respiratory symptoms or interstitial pneumonia may occur, so in cases of cough or difficulty breathing, consult medical personnel promptly. This medication may affect the central nervous system leading to restlessness, anxiety, dizziness, hallucinations, or drowsiness; monitoring is required if these symptoms arise. Oral conditions should be observed since disruptions such as oral inflammation or candidiasis may occur. There may be a risk of bleeding tendency or deficiency symptoms of vitamin B complex due to vitamin K deficiency; thus, vigilance over bleeding symptoms or neurological symptoms is necessary. Interactions may occur when used with other medications, particularly those affecting the kidneys, anticoagulants, or oral contraceptives; caution is advised in these cases. The safety of this medication during pregnancy has not been established, so it should only be used cautiously when necessary, and those who are breastfeeding should also be aware that small amounts of the drug may pass into breast milk. For newborns under 1 month, safety and efficacy have not been confirmed; therefore, it is recommended not to use it. In elderly patients, adverse reactions can occur more easily due to diminished physiological functions, so dose adjustments and monitoring of condition are essential. When using this medication, it is advisable to confirm susceptibility and administer only for the necessary minimum duration to prevent the emergence of resistant bacteria. Additionally, before using this drug, thoroughly check for a history of allergies to prevent severe reactions.
