This medication is effective against various bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, penicillin-resistant strains, various streptococci, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and is primarily used to treat ocular infectious diseases such as blepharitis, dacryocystitis, styes, conjunctivitis, keratitis, and corneal ulcers. This drug alleviates inflammation around the eyes and within eye tissues, treating infections and improving eye health.

How to use

Adult use

For mild to moderate infections, apply approximately 1 cm to the infected area 2 to 3 times a day. For severe infections, apply 1 cm to the infected area every 3 to 4 hours until symptoms improve and then gradually taper off. Adjust as appropriate based on age and symptoms.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with allergies to this drug, aminoglycoside antibiotics, or bacitracin. During use, symptoms such as itching, swelling, redness, erythematous conjunctivitis, and temporary stinging of the eye may occur, in which case use should be stopped immediately. Additionally, occasional irritation or pain may appear, as well as systemic reactions such as skin rash, urticaria, severe allergic reactions like anaphylaxis, or blisters, so caution is necessary. When using this drug, it is recommended to check the sensitivity of the infectious bacteria to prevent the development of resistant strains and to administer only for the minimum necessary duration. To prevent allergic reactions or shock, thorough medical history and skin reaction tests prior to use are advisable. In patients receiving systemic administration of drugs with similar components, toxicity to nerves and ears may occur, so careful monitoring of blood concentration is necessary when used together with other aminoglycoside drugs. During treatment, wearing contact lenses should be avoided to prevent the spread of infection, and long-term repeated use may lead to resistance, necessitating discontinuation and appropriate treatment if superinfection occurs. This drug may delay the healing of corneal injuries, so caution is needed. In patients with neuromuscular disorders, this drug may worsen muscle weakness, necessitating careful use. When antibiotics including this drug are used with anticoagulants, the anticoagulant effect may be enhanced, so periodic checks of blood coagulation status are required, and adjustments to anticoagulant dosage may be necessary. During pregnancy, while no teratogenic toxicity has been observed in animal studies, use should be limited to necessary cases, and during lactation, it may harm the baby, so breastfeeding should be discontinued or administered only when the benefit outweighs the risk. In case of overdose, symptoms such as keratitis, erythema, increased tearing, and eyelid itching may occur, so blood concentration should be monitored, and if necessary, blood dialysis and other measures should be taken. When using, do not inject into the eye, and take care not to let the end of the tube touch the eye to avoid contamination. In South Korea, resistance to this drug's components has been reported for various strains, so caution should be exercised to prevent the occurrence of resistant bacteria.
