Treatment of nocturia associated with nocturnal polyuria (adults only) Administer 0.1mg of desmopressin acetate orally at bedtime. If the effect is insufficient after one week, increase the dose to 0.2mg. If the effect remains insufficient, increase the dose at one-week intervals up to 0.4mg. Precautions

This medication involves the regulation of body fluids and can pose a risk of hyponatremia and non-responsive states due to water overload, especially in elderly individuals or patients with certain conditions. Therefore, caution should be exercised to drink only enough water to relieve thirst. Patients who have had allergic reactions to this medication, those with severe kidney dysfunction, patients with certain heart diseases, and individuals with certain inherited metabolic disorders should not use this medication. It should especially only be administered to nocturia patients with normal blood pressure, and it may pose risks to patients with other conditions. Caution should be exercised when using this medication in patients with hypertension, chronic kidney disease, pregnant women, children, the elderly, and patients at risk of electrolyte imbalance or increased intracranial pressure. It is also crucial to first treat any underlying conditions causing urinary issues. This medication can cause severe water intoxication and hyponatremia, and side effects such as coma, seizures, or weight gain may occur, especially in the elderly. Allergies, headaches, nausea, and skin reactions have been reported in patients with nocturia. Fluid intake should be restricted for a certain period before and after administration; failure to do so may increase the risk of water retention and hyponatremia. In particular, patients over 65 years of age are at a higher risk for developing hyponatremia, so blood sodium levels should be monitored regularly. This medication may interact with other drugs; caution is necessary when taken concurrently with antidepressants, diuretics, steroids, or some anticonvulsants. In pregnant women, there may be rare uterine contraction effects; thus, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should be cautious when administering this medication. Breastfeeding women are advised to discontinue breastfeeding, as this medication can be passed into breast milk. In the case of an overdose, symptoms such as headaches, nausea, seizures, and loss of consciousness may occur. In such cases, administration should be discontinued, and fluid intake should be restricted, with diuretics used as necessary for treatment.
