This medicine is used for the treatment and prevention of herpes simplex virus infections of the skin and mucous membranes, including primary and recurrent genital herpes. It is also effective in treating shingles virus infections, particularly in alleviating acute pain. However, its efficacy for postherpetic neuralgia has not yet been proven. Additionally, it is used for treating chickenpox in children over 2 years of age. Therefore, this drug is effective for a variety of viral infections.

This drug should not be used in patients who have hypersensitivity to this drug or its components. Patients with impaired kidney function are at risk of psychological neurological adverse reactions when using this drug, thus it should be used cautiously. Patients with poor liver function should also use this drug cautiously as it may further worsen liver function. Infants and children should be especially careful when using this drug, and it should be administered only at the minimal necessary dosage. Elderly patients may have an increased risk of high drug concentration due to decreased kidney function, and should receive adjusted doses and intervals. Serious allergic reactions, such as shock or anaphylaxis, can occur during treatment, hence the patient's condition should be closely monitored. If hypersensitivity reactions such as skin rash, fever, blisters, or urticaria occur, administration should be stopped immediately, and the appropriate treatment should be received. Symptoms of severe skin disorders, such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis, may occur and caution is advised. Psychological and neurological symptoms may include consciousness disturbances, confusion, hallucinations, seizures, drowsiness, and anxiety, potentially occurring more frequently in elderly patients or those with kidney issues. Symptoms of kidney dysfunction such as renal failure, hematuria, or proteinuria may manifest, so kidney function should be regularly monitored. Hematologic and lymphatic disorders can cause anemia, leukopenia or leukocytosis, and bleeding, requiring periodic blood tests. Liver function abnormalities may lead to hepatitis, jaundice, or elevated liver function tests, necessitating careful monitoring of liver condition. Gastrointestinal symptoms may include gastritis, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, and if severe symptoms occur, treatment should be discontinued and a doctor consulted. Adequate hydration is necessary during treatment, especially to prevent dehydration when administered at high doses. To enhance therapeutic effect, treatment for shingles should begin within 5 days of symptom onset, and for chickenpox, within 3 days. In patients with impaired immune function, intravenous treatment should be considered, and caution is necessary when operating machinery or driving due to potential consciousness disturbances during treatment. This drug may interact with other medications, particularly those affecting kidney function, probenecid, cimetidine, theophylline, or mycophenolate mofetil, so caution is required when used in combination. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should only use this drug if the therapeutic benefits outweigh the risks and should avoid use while breastfeeding. In the event of overdose, kidney function deterioration and neurological symptoms may occur, and immediate notification of medical personnel and appropriate treatment is essential. In elderly patients and those with kidney issues, the risk of adverse reactions is higher, thus careful dose adjustments and adequate hydration are necessary during administration.
