Improvement of postprandial hyperglycemia in diabetes mellitus
This medication is used for diabetic patients who have difficulty controlling blood sugar levels despite dietary and exercise therapy. It is also helpful for patients on oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin who do not achieve adequate blood sugar control. It contributes to improving postprandial hyperglycemia and stabilizing blood sugar levels. In other words, this medication is used to enhance blood sugar management in diabetic patients.
Since efficacy and tolerability vary from patient to patient, the physician must determine the dose according to the patient's condition. The usual dosage is as follows. Adults are generally administered 0.2mg of voglibose per dose orally 3 times daily before each meal. If the effect is inadequate, the dose per administration may be increased to 0.3mg while carefully monitoring the patient's progress.
This medication should not be administered to patients with severe ketosis, diabetic coma, or pre-coma. These patients require fluid and insulin therapy. It is also advisable not to administer this medication to patients with severe infections or those undergoing surgery, as well as to patients with serious trauma, where insulin therapy is recommended. Patients with a history of allergic reactions to the components of this medication should not use it. Chronic bowel disease patients with digestive and absorption disorders should use this medication cautiously, as the patient’s condition may worsen. Patients who may have increased intestinal gas that could worsen symptoms, such as those who previously had abdominal surgery or have conditions like bowel obstruction, colonic stricture, or ulcers, should also be cautious. Patients with severely impaired liver or kidney function should be administered this medication with caution, as metabolic changes from the medication may affect blood sugar control. For elderly patients, as physiological functions decline, it is important to start with a low dose and carefully monitor blood sugar and gastrointestinal symptoms. When used with other hypoglycemic agents, there is a risk of hypoglycemia, so starting at a low dose is recommended, and patients should be thoroughly informed of hypoglycemic symptoms and how to respond. When using this medication, if hypoglycemic symptoms occur, glucose should be administered instead of sucrose (sugar), and in cases of severe hypoglycemia, intravenous glucose or glucagon injection should be used. In patients with severe liver dysfunction, symptoms such as hepatitis, jaundice, and liver dysfunction may occur, so the medication should be discontinued immediately and appropriate treatment should be sought if symptoms arise. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal bloating and increased gas may occur and should be discontinued if severe symptoms develop. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should only use this medication when the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks, as its safety has not been established. Breastfeeding women should avoid it, as this medication may affect milk production; if it must be used, breastfeeding should be avoided. Safety in children has not been established and there is no experience with use, so administration is not recommended. While taking this medication, regular blood sugar checks should be performed to monitor treatment progress, and if blood sugar control remains insufficient after 2-3 months of administration, a change in treatment method should be considered. Lastly, some other medications taken concurrently may affect blood sugar control, so interactions should be carefully considered during concomitant use.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a tightly sealed container to protect it from air and moisture, and it is recommended to keep it at room temperature between 1°C and 30°C. Storing it this way ensures that the effectiveness of the medication is safely maintained.
