Precautions

This medication should not be administered to patients who are hypersensitive to this medication, its components, or to valaciclovir. Caution should be exercised when administering to patients with decreased kidney function, as neuropsychiatric adverse reactions may occur more frequently. Patients with impaired liver function should be administered with caution due to the risk of further deterioration of liver function. In infants and children, the dosage should be minimal and given with special care. Elderly patients may have prolonged drug retention due to decreased renal function, hence the dosage and administration intervals should be adjusted with caution. Severe allergic reactions such as shock or anaphylaxis can rarely occur; if symptoms like decreased blood pressure or difficulty breathing are experienced, administration should be stopped immediately, and medical treatment should be sought. Hypersensitivity reactions such as skin rash, fever, vesicles, or urticaria may occur; if such symptoms appear, medication should be discontinued and a doctor consulted. Alopecia, dermatitis, severe skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, Lyell syndrome) etc. can occur, so the skin condition should be closely monitored. Neuropsychiatric symptoms like confusion, drowsiness, hallucinations, and seizures can manifest, especially in elderly or kidney-impaired patients, warranting caution. Kidney function may be adversely affected; hence, it is important to regularly check urine status or conduct kidney-related tests. Blood-related abnormalities like leukopenia, bleeding, or anemia may occur; therefore, routine blood test results should be monitored. Liver function abnormalities or jaundice symptoms may emerge, thus liver function tests should be performed, and liver condition observed. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or diarrhea may occur. If symptoms are severe, medication should be discontinued and a doctor consulted. Systemic symptoms like fever, muscle weakness, and headache may arise, hence one should closely monitor their physical condition. Symptoms such as myalgia or arthralgia may also occur. Cardiac rhythm irregularities or blood pressure changes may occur, so cardiovascular status should be monitored during administration. Difficulties in urination or urinary obstruction may occur; therefore, if encountering issues during urination, inform a doctor. Other symptoms reported include alopecia, sweating, visual disturbances, shortness of breath, so overall bodily changes should be closely monitored. If symptoms do not improve or worsen after 5 days of use for herpes simplex and chickenpox, or 7 days for shingles, alternative treatment methods should be considered. It is generally recommended to administer the medication as soon as symptoms occur, ideally within 5 days for shingles after skin symptoms appear, and within 3 days for chickenpox. In immunocompromised patients, intravenous administration should be considered. During the treatment period, particularly with high doses, adequate hydration is essential to prevent dehydration and reduce renal toxicity. In the treatment of recurrent genital herpes, careful consideration should be given whether to continue after more than 1 year of administration. Due to the risk of consciousness disturbance, caution should be exercised while driving or operating dangerous machinery, with additional caution for kidney-impaired patients. There may be drug interactions with this medication and other drugs, particularly those affecting kidney function, necessitating caution with co-administration. Pregnant women or those who might become pregnant should only use this medication when the benefits outweigh the risks to the fetus. The components of this medication are excreted in breast milk; therefore, ceasing breastfeeding during treatment is considered safe. Careful administration in infants and children is advised; especially in newborns or low birth weight infants, as safety has not been established and should only be used when necessary. Elderly patients are at risk of prolonged drug retention in their system due to diminished renal function; hence dosage and intervals should be adjusted alongside ensuring adequate hydration. In cases of overdose, severe symptoms such as coma, seizures, and confusion may occur, and renal failure could develop, meaning immediate medical attention should be sought. In instances of drug overdose, measuring blood concentration may be necessary, and treatment such as hemodialysis might be required if indicated. Administering high doses could have potential genetic effects or impact reproductive function; however, such effects have not been reported within the normal dosage range.
