For acute gonococcal urethritis, this medication should be administered in a single dose of 3 g combined with 1 g of probenecid.

Precautions

This medication is an antibiotic that kills bacteria by interfering with the synthesis of bacterial cell walls by binding to specific proteins. Patients who have experienced severe allergic reactions or shock due to this medication should not use it. Additionally, individuals allergic to this medication or to cephalosporin antibiotics should not take it. Those allergic to penicillin antibiotics or with a propensity for allergic symptoms such as bronchial asthma, rash, or urticaria should exercise caution when using this medication. Patients with severely impaired kidney function or those who have difficulty with oral intake, elderly individuals, and those in poor general condition should be closely monitored when using this medication, as vitamin K deficiency symptoms may appear. Individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, especially colitis, or those allergic to the dye Yellow No. 5 should also be administered this medication with caution. This medication can rarely cause severe allergic reactions such as shock or anaphylaxis; if symptoms appear, administration should be discontinued immediately, and appropriate treatment should be provided. Severe skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis may occur, so skin condition should be carefully monitored. Blood cell counts may be affected, so regular testing is advised; if abnormalities are detected, administration should be stopped. Liver function may be compromised, with the potential for transient hepatitis or jaundice, so liver condition should also be carefully monitored. Kidney function may decline, leading to issues such as acute kidney failure, necessitating regular kidney function tests and cessation of administration if abnormalities are found. Gastrointestinal side effects such as pseudomembranous colitis, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting may occur, and if symptoms develop, consulting a healthcare provider is essential. If respiratory symptoms such as fever, cough, or difficulty breathing appear, administration should be discontinued, and appropriate treatment should be initiated. CNS side effects like anxiety, agitation, dizziness, hallucinations, and drowsiness may rarely occur. Disruption in normal flora can lead to conditions like stomatitis or candidiasis. Symptoms of vitamin K deficiency resulting in bleeding tendencies or vitamin B group deficiency may also rarely occur, so caution is needed. When using this medication, it is advisable to perform susceptibility tests to prevent the emergence of resistant bacteria and administer it for the minimal duration necessary. As with other antibiotics, the possibility of co-infection with resistant microorganisms should be considered, and appropriate treatment plans selected. When used with probenecid, blood levels of this medication may increase; therefore, caution is advised. When used in conjunction with nephrotoxic drugs or diuretics, renal function may be compromised, so careful administration is warranted. Use with anticoagulants may increase the risk of bleeding, necessitating regular blood coagulation checks and possible dose adjustments. Combining with oral contraceptives may reduce contraceptive effectiveness, so alternate methods of contraception should be employed. Some antibiotics may reduce the effectiveness of this medication, so caution is required when administered together. During pregnancy, safety has not been established, and it should only be used when the benefits outweigh the risks; in breastfeeding women, it may be transmitted in small quantities through breast milk, so cautious use is advised. Safety and efficacy for neonates under one month have not been confirmed, so it is preferable not to use it. Elderly individuals may experience side effects more readily due to decreased bodily functions, so doses and intervals should be adjusted, with careful monitoring.
