Treatment of genital herpes and herpes zoster (acute pain) and improvement of chickenpox
This medication is used to treat and prevent infections caused by herpes simplex virus in the skin and mucosal tissues, including primary and recurrent genital herpes. It is also effective in treating herpes zoster viral infections and particularly helps alleviate acute pain. However, the complete efficacy for postherpetic neuralgia is yet to be confirmed. This medication is also applicable for treating chickenpox in children aged 2 years and older. Through this efficacy, it helps alleviate symptoms and treat conditions related to viral infections.
1. Treatment of herpes simplex virus infections - Administer acyclovir 200 mg five times a day at 4-hour intervals for 5 days; treatment may be extended in cases of severe primary infections. - In severe immunocompromised patients or those with gastrointestinal absorption disorders, the dose may be increased to 400 mg per dose or switched to intravenous administration. 2. Prevention of herpes simplex infections in immunocompetent patients -

Treatment of herpes simplex infections and prevention of herpes simplex infections in immunocompromised patients - Age 2 years and older: Follow adult dosage. - Under 2 years: Administer 1/2 of the adult dose. - There is no definitive data for the prevention of herpes simplex virus infection in immunocompetent children.
This medication should not be used in patients who are allergic to this drug or its components. Caution is advised for patients with poor kidney function as they may be more susceptible to psychological adverse reactions. Patients with compromised liver function should also use this medication cautiously as it might further worsen liver function. Use in young children, particularly infants and toddlers, should be minimized and only when necessary since there is insufficient safety data available. Elderly patients should exercise caution when using this medication as they are more likely to have decreased kidney function, which may result in prolonged drug retention and increased risk of side effects. Severe allergic reactions, such as anaphylactic shock, can occur rarely while using this drug; immediate discontinuation and medical assistance is needed if symptoms such as difficulty in breathing or low blood pressure appear. Skin rashes, itching, blisters, and fever may develop as hypersensitivity reactions; if these symptoms arise, discontinue usage and consult a physician. Neurological symptoms such as confusion, drowsiness, seizures, and hallucinations may occur, particularly in those with weak kidney function or in the elderly. Adequate hydration is necessary as the drug can burden the kidneys, making it crucial to avoid dehydration. This drug is most effective when used early in the course of the disease; if symptoms do not improve or worsen, consider alternative treatment. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should carefully weigh the benefits and risks of using this drug, and nursing mothers should discontinue breastfeeding while using it. Interactions may occur when used with other medications; patients taking other drugs should inform their physician or pharmacist. Serious side effects may result from overdose, thus the prescribed dosage must be strictly followed, and immediate medical attention should be sought in the event of overdose. Caution is advised during driving or operating dangerous machinery while on this medication due to the potential for impaired consciousness or drowsiness.
