Treatment of hyperlipidemia (primary, mixed) and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk such as myocardial infarction
This medication is effective for primary hyperlipidemia, especially hypercholesterolemia (Type IIa) and cases of combined hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia (Type IIb). It is also used to reduce the risk of death from myocardial infarction and coronary heart disease in high-risk patients with hypercholesterolemia or combined hypercholesterolemia. It is particularly recommended for men over 45 years of age who have high LDL cholesterol levels despite dietary changes and risk factors such as a history of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, smoking, and hypertension. Furthermore, it helps to reduce the risk of recurrent myocardial infarction, the need for cardiovascular revascularization, ischemic stroke, and transient ischemic attacks in patients with a history of myocardial infarction or unstable angina. This efficacy improves the prevention and management of cardiovascular diseases.
Before starting treatment, patients should begin a low-cholesterol diet and continue it. The usual starting dose is 10mg, 20mg, or 40mg taken once daily. Depending on the patient's response, the dose may be increased to a maximum of 40mg. The maintenance dose is 10-40mg taken once daily. For patients with a history of myocardial infarction or unstable angina, a dose of 40mg/day is used to achieve treatment goals.
This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, it should not be administered to those who have had allergic reactions to this drug, patients with severely impaired liver function, pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, children, those with severe liver or kidney dysfunction, patients with muscle diseases, and those with improper bile flow, as well as certain types of hypercholesterolemia patients. Patients with weak liver or kidney function, those taking specific other medications, those who consume excessive alcohol, and those with muscle weakness should use this drug with caution. As this medication is primarily metabolized in the liver, it may affect liver function, and patients with impaired kidney function may be at higher risk for muscle injury. If a rash or allergic symptoms occur while taking this medication, the user should stop taking it immediately and consult a physician. Additionally, gastrointestinal symptoms, liver function abnormalities, muscle pain or weakness, and psychological symptoms may appear, so it is important to notify healthcare personnel quickly if such symptoms occur. This medication can cause muscle injury, particularly severe muscle diseases such as rhabdomyolysis, so if muscle pain or weakness worsens, it is essential to inform a doctor. Furthermore, it can rarely lead to cognitive impairments such as memory loss or confusion, but most cases resolve after discontinuation of the drug. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take this medication and should consult a doctor if they are planning to conceive or might become pregnant. It is also not used in children because its safety and efficacy have not been established. The elderly may have different drug reactions due to decreased body function, so caution is required when taking this medication. This medication may increase the risk of muscle injury when taken with other lipid-lowering agents or certain medications, so it is essential to consult a doctor before combining it. Regular blood tests to check liver function and blood lipid levels should also be done while taking this medication, and dosage may be discontinued if there is no therapeutic effect or if adverse reactions are severe. In the case of overdose, appropriate examination, including liver function tests, is needed even if there are no specific symptoms. This medication is more effective when taken after dinner, and if taken with some antacids or ion exchange resins, a time gap should be maintained. Finally, it should be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers for safety.
