This medication is primarily used to treat and prevent infections of the skin and mucosal tissues caused by the herpes simplex virus, including primary and recurrent genital herpes. It is also effective in treating infections caused by the shingles virus, especially in alleviating acute pain. However, its effectiveness for postherpetic neuralgia has not yet been clearly demonstrated. This medication is also used to treat chickenpox in children over the age of 2. Overall, it helps improve viral infections.

Precautions

This medication may not be suitable for certain patients. Patients who are allergic to this medication or any of its components, or have previously shown hypersensitivity to valacyclovir, should not take this medication. Additionally, since it contains lactose, it may be risky for patients with genetic disorders that prevent them from digesting lactose. Patients with impaired kidney function are at a higher risk of experiencing neurological adverse reactions while using this medication. Patients with reduced liver function should also use this medication cautiously, as it can worsen liver function. Special caution should be exercised when administering this medication to infants, children, and the elderly. Elderly patients are especially at risk of kidney function deterioration, which can lead to prolonged drug retention in the body and more frequent adverse reactions. Though rare, serious allergic reactions, such as anaphylactic shock, may occur during treatment with this medication. If symptoms such as low blood pressure, difficulty breathing, or chest tightness appear, immediate discontinuation and medical attention are required. If a rash, fever, blisters, or urticaria-like reactions occur on the skin, discontinue this medication and seek appropriate treatment. In severe cases, syndromes causing serious damage to the skin and mucous membranes may occur; caution is advised. This medication can cause various side effects on the nervous system, including altered consciousness, confusion, hallucinations, seizures, drowsiness, and anxiety. Such symptoms are particularly common among elderly patients or those with weak kidney function. As this medication can affect kidney function, abnormalities such as renal failure, hematuria, and proteinuria may occur, necessitating regular monitoring. It can also affect the blood and lymphatic systems, leading to issues like leukopenia, anemia, and bleeding, thus requiring caution. Various side effects, including liver dysfunction, gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain), fever, muscle pain, joint pain, and changes in blood pressure have been reported; symptoms warrant immediate consultation with medical personnel. This medication is most effective when taken as soon as possible after the onset of the infection, especially in conditions like shingles and chickenpox. Patients with weakened immune function may require treatment in the form of intravenous injection. Sufficient hydration is important during use to prevent dehydration and reduce kidney toxicity risk. This medication may cause drowsiness or alter consciousness, so caution should be exercised when driving or operating hazardous machinery. It can interact with other medications; therefore, especially when taken with drugs affecting kidney function or specific antibiotics and immunosuppressants, consultation with a physician or pharmacist is necessary. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should consider the risks to the fetus when using this medication, and breastfeeding mothers should discontinue nursing as the components may pass into breast milk. In cases of overdose, coma, seizures, and renal failure may occur, requiring immediate medical intervention, monitoring blood drug levels, and considering treatments such as dialysis if necessary. Long-term administration of high doses of this medication may affect genetic integrity or reproductive function; however, the risk is considered low at standard dosages.
