Precautions

This medication should not be mixed with solutions or drugs containing calcium, and co-administration can be risky. In particular, it must not be used in newborns under 28 days of age when given with calcium, as precipitation may occur leading to potentially fatal problems. It should not be administered to patients with a history of allergies to this drug or to cephalosporins or penicillins, and it may pose risks to premature infants or newborns with jaundice, hypoalbuminemia, or acidosis. Patients with a history of allergic reactions, those with asthma or a tendency to develop skin rashes, and those with severe kidney dysfunction should exercise special caution when using this medication. Furthermore, elderly patients or those in poor health who have difficulty taking by mouth may show signs of vitamin K deficiency, so blood tests should be conducted to monitor their condition, and vitamin K should be given if necessary. This drug may cause a variety of side effects, including eosinophilia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, diarrhea, rash, and liver function abnormalities, so the patient's condition should be closely monitored during administration. If severe allergic reactions or shock symptoms occur, administration should be stopped immediately and emergency treatment sought. Additionally, long-term use or high-dose administration may lead to precipitation in the gallbladder, and kidney damage could occur in patients with compromised kidney function, necessitating regular check-ups. This drug may impact kidney function when used with other cephalosporin antibiotics, certain diuretics, or aminoglycoside antibiotics, so caution is needed when combining treatments. Calcium should especially not be co-administered due to serious interactions. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should carefully consider the risks and benefits of using this drug, and it is safer not to administer it to newborns or premature infants to mitigate the risk of bilirubin encephalopathy. Elderly patients may experience side effects more readily due to decreased bodily function and should be closely monitored with adjustments to dosage and administration intervals. During administration, pain, inflammation, or thrombophlebitis at the injection site may occur, requiring careful management of injection methods and speeds, and the prepared solution should be used as soon as possible while adhering to proper storage conditions. Finally, if diarrhea or abdominal pain worsens while using this medication, consider the possibility of a Clostridium difficile infection and notify medical personnel immediately.
