Treatment of herpes simplex and herpes zoster (acute pain) and improvement of chickenpox
This medication is used to treat and prevent infections caused by the herpes simplex virus affecting the skin and mucous membranes, including primary and recurrent genital herpes. It is also effective in treating herpes zoster virus infections and helps alleviate acute pain. However, it should be noted that its effectiveness against post-herpetic neuralgia has not yet been definitively proven. It is also used to treat chickenpox in children over the age of 2. This helps to improve symptoms effectively for a variety of viral infections.
For the treatment of simplex virus infections, administer Acyclovir 200 mg 5 times a day at 4-hour intervals for 5 days; treatment may be extended for severe primary infections. For severely immunocompromised patients or those with gastrointestinal absorption disorders, the dosage may be increased to 400 mg at a time or administered intravenously. For the prevention of simplex virus infections, administer Acyclovir 200 mg 4 times a day at 6-hour intervals, or 400 mg twice a day at 12-hour intervals.
Children over 2 years should follow adult dosages. Children under 2 years should be given half of the adult dosage. For treating chickenpox in children over 2 years, administer 20 mg per kg of body weight (maximum 800 mg per dose) 4 times a day.
This drug should not be used by patients who are allergic to this drug or its components. Patients with impaired kidney function should use this medication with caution due to an increased risk of psychiatric complications. Patients with compromised liver function should also be careful, as liver function may worsen when using this drug. This medication should be administered cautiously in infants and young children. Elderly patients should also take this medication with care, as they may experience side effects more readily. During the use of this medication, shock or severe allergic reactions may rarely occur; should symptoms such as low blood pressure or difficulty breathing develop, stop the medication immediately and seek medical attention. If there are skin rashes, fever, blisters, or hives, stop this medication and consult a physician. There may be hair loss, severe dermatitis, or serious inflammation of the skin and mucous membranes, so report any skin changes immediately. Changes in mental state may occur, including decreased concentration, confusion, hallucinations, seizures, drowsiness, and tremors, especially in older adults or those with reduced kidney function. There may be issues with the kidneys, manifested as blood or protein in the urine or renal failure. The blood and lymphatic system may be affected, potentially leading to changes in blood cell counts, bleeding, or purpura. There may be liver inflammation or dysfunction, and jaundice, so it is important to monitor liver health. Gastrointestinal symptoms may include gastritis, thirst, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal pain; if such symptoms occur, cease the medication and consult a physician. Systemically, fever, swelling, weakness, and headaches may occur. Muscle or joint pain may arise. Cardiovascular issues may include arrhythmias, chest pain, or changes in blood pressure. Urination may become difficult, so notify your physician if there is any urinary issue. Other symptoms may include difficulty breathing, visual disturbances, taste changes, hair loss, sweating, or electrolyte imbalances. This medication is most effective when administered as soon as symptoms appear, and adequate hydration is necessary during the treatment period. Particularly with high-dose administration, it is essential to drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration and reduce nephrotoxicity. When driving or operating hazardous machinery, be cautious as drowsiness or altered consciousness may occur. There may be interactions with other medications, so inform your physician or pharmacist about any current medications being taken. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should use this medication cautiously, and nursing mothers should discontinue breastfeeding during treatment. Administer to infants and young children only when absolutely necessary, taking their safety into full consideration. Due to the risk of prolonged drug retention and increased side effects, elderly patients require careful adjustment of dosage and intervals, and adequate hydration is crucial. In case of overdose, symptoms may include confusion, seizures, or coma, requiring immediate treatment, and blood dialysis may be necessary.
