This medication is used to prevent seizures due to hypomagnesemia and eclampsia. It also helps prevent uterine contractions and replenish deficient electrolytes. Therefore, it is effective in symptoms related to hypomagnesemia and in preventing eclampsia and uterine contractions.
Dosage
○ Seizures due to hypomagnesemia: Intravenous injection of 1 to 2 g as magnesium sulfate (4.05 to 8.1 mmol). ○ Eclampsia seizures: 4 to 5 g given intravenously over 10 minutes (16.2 to 20.25 mmol). ○ Prevention of uterine contractions: Initial 4 g given intravenously (16.2 mmol). Precautions
This medication should be used with caution as glass fragments may mix in when using glass ampoules. It is particularly important to be careful when used in children and the elderly. It should not be used in patients with poor kidney function, in a coma, with elevated serum magnesium levels, with heart conduction disturbances, or in patients with myasthenia gravis. It should be administered cautiously to children with intestinal parasitic diseases or patients with heart conditions. This medication may cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting or dry mouth and, very rarely, symptoms of arrhythmia or vasodilation may occur. Symptoms of the autonomic nervous system such as headache, dizziness, tremors, and tingling have also been reported. In cases of overdose, serious side effects such as warmth or thirst, decreased blood pressure, central nervous system depression, reduced heart rate, and respiratory paralysis may occur, so caution is required. In such cases, calcium should be administered intravenously for detoxification. When used with other medications, the central nervous system depressant effect may be enhanced, so barbiturates, narcotic analgesics, and general anesthetics should be avoided. Caution is also needed when used together with iron supplements or certain antibiotics and sodium fluoride which may interfere with absorption. During pregnancy, it may be administered for the treatment of eclampsia, however, it should be closely monitored as it may cause muscle relaxation or hypotension in the fetus. Administration during delivery poses a risk of respiratory distress in the newborn, thus it should not be used within 2 hours after delivery. With long-term or repeated use, monitoring of calcium and magnesium levels in neonates is necessary, as skeletal side effects may occur. During breastfeeding, safety has not been established, and it is advisable not to administer unless in special cases. Elderly patients should use this medication cautiously, slowing the administration rate and reducing the dosage due to decreased bodily functions. In cases of overdose, serious symptoms such as arrhythmias, altered consciousness, and respiratory depression may appear, so administration should be immediately stopped, and if necessary, calcium gluconate should be administered slowly intravenously for treatment. This medication should be administered slowly in concentrations below 10% for intravenous use, and care should be taken to avoid mixing with other specific preparations as it may cause precipitation. Additionally, for infection prevention, the injection sites and equipment should be thoroughly disinfected, should be used immediately after opening, and any remaining medication should not be reused.
