Treatment of genital herpes and herpes zoster (acute pain) and improvement of chickenpox
This medication is used for the treatment and prevention of herpes simplex virus infections in the skin and mucous membranes, including primary and recurrent genital herpes. It is also effective in treating herpes zoster viral infections, particularly helping to alleviate acute phase pain. However, its efficacy against postherpetic neuralgia has not yet been firmly established. This medication is also utilized for the treatment of chickenpox in children over 2 years of age. Overall, it is effectively used for the treatment of various viral infections.
1. Treatment of herpes simplex virus infections - As acyclovir, administer 200 mg five times a day at 4-hour intervals for 5 days - Treatment may be extended in cases of severe primary infections - In severely immunocompromised patients or those with gastrointestinal absorption issues, the dose may be increased to 400 mg per dose or administered intravenously 2. Prevention of herpes simplex virus infections in patients with normal immune function - Administer 200 mg four times a day at about 6-hour intervals

This medication should not be used in patients who are allergic to this medication or its components. Patients with impaired kidney function may experience neurological side effects more readily, so care should be taken when using it. Patients with reduced liver function should be administered cautiously as there is a risk of further deterioration of liver function. Infants and children must use this medication with special caution and it should be used only to the minimum extent necessary. Elderly patients are likely to have impaired kidney function, which can lead to prolonged retention of the medication in the body, so careful adjustment of dosage and administration intervals is required. During the use of this medication, severe allergic reactions such as shock may occur infrequently; if symptoms such as hypotension, respiratory distress, or chest tightness occur, the medication should be stopped immediately and medical consultation sought. Skin rash, fever, blisters, hives, and other symptoms may occur, so if any of these symptoms arise, stop taking the medication and receive appropriate treatment. Alopecia, severe dermatitis, and severe inflammation of the skin and mucous membranes may also occur, requiring careful attention. Neuropsychiatric symptoms such as confusion, drowsiness, hallucinations, and seizures may manifest, especially in elderly patients or those with impaired kidney function. Kidney-related side effects such as worsening kidney function, hematuria, and proteinuria may occur, so it is necessary to regularly monitor kidney status. Blood abnormalities may manifest as anemia, changes in white blood cell count, and bleeding; any abnormal symptoms should be promptly reported. Hepatitis and jaundice may indicate liver dysfunction, which may necessitate liver function tests. Gastrointestinal side effects may include gastritis, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, and if symptoms are severe, medication should be discontinued. Fatigue, fever, muscle pain, and joint pain may occur, requiring careful observation of overall health. Arrhythmias and changes in blood pressure may occur, so if such symptoms arise, consulting with medical personnel is advised. Ureteral obstruction or urinary difficulties may rarely occur, and any abnormalities should be reported immediately. This medication is most effective when administered early in the onset of the disease, so it should be taken as soon as symptoms appear. Adequate hydration is crucial to prevent dehydration and protect kidney function during high-dose administration. Women who are pregnant or could become pregnant should carefully consider the risks to the fetus when using this medication, and during breastfeeding, it is recommended to stop nursing as the drug can pass into breast milk. It is advisable to avoid driving or operating hazardous machinery while taking this medication. When using this medication alongside other drugs, interactions may alter the effects or side effects, so patients should inform their healthcare provider of any other medications they are taking. In the case of overdose, serious neurological symptoms and kidney damage may occur, so if an overdose is suspected, immediate medical attention is required.
