This medication is used for the treatment and prevention of herpes simplex virus infections of the skin and mucous membranes, including primary and recurrent genital herpes. It is also effective in treating varicella-zoster virus infections, particularly in alleviating pain that occurs during the acute phase. However, its effectiveness for postherpetic neuralgia has not yet been definitively proven. This medication is also used for the treatment of chickenpox in children aged 2 years and older. Overall, it is a useful medication for the treatment and prevention of viral infections.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients who are allergic to it or its ingredients, or who have had hypersensitivity reactions to similar drugs. Rarely, symptoms such as shock, consciousness disturbance, seizures, or psychiatric symptoms may appear, in which case medical personnel should be notified immediately. This medication can burden the kidneys, so it is important to ensure adequate fluid intake during the treatment period to prevent dehydration and reduce renal toxicity. Particular attention should be paid to kidney function when administering at high doses. This medication may interact with specific drugs, so if other medications are being taken, it is essential to inform a doctor or pharmacist. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should only use this medication when the benefits outweigh the risks, and breastfeeding women should discontinue nursing. Caution should be exercised when driving or operating hazardous machinery during treatment as consciousness disturbance may occur. In the case of overdose, serious neurological effects or renal failure may occur, so the dosage should be strictly adhered to and if abnormal symptoms appear, immediate medical attention should be sought.
