This medication helps alleviate symptoms by neutralizing stomach acid in conditions such as gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers, gastritis, and excessive gastric acid. It also has an effect in relieving symptoms of constipation. Therefore, it is used for gastrointestinal-related disorders and constipation.
Dosage
For gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, and excessive gastric acid, administer magnesium hydroxide orally in divided doses of 1-2.5 g per day. For constipation, administer 1-2 g orally in 1-2 divided doses per day. Adjust as appropriate according to age and symptoms.
Precautions
This medication should not be used in patients with severely impaired kidney function, as excessive levels of magnesium can pose a risk in cases of poor kidney function. Furthermore, it should also be avoided in patients with diarrhea, as severe diarrhea may worsen the symptoms. Caution should be exercised when using this medication in patients with weak heart function or those with already elevated magnesium levels due to a risk of side effects. Taking this medication can occasionally cause diarrhea, as it may affect the gastrointestinal tract. Long-term or high-dose use can lead to hypermagnesemia, so the condition should be monitored closely. If hypermagnesemia is suspected, treatment can be administered via potassium salt injection; therefore, immediate consultation with healthcare providers is necessary if symptoms appear. This medication may interfere with the absorption of certain antibiotics, so it is advisable not to take them concurrently. Additionally, when taken with other medications, caution is needed as it may affect the absorption or excretion of those drugs. Taking it with a large amount of milk or calcium-containing medications may lead to milk-alkali syndrome, so symptoms should be monitored closely, and if any issues arise, the medication should be discontinued. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and it’s best kept in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Moreover, to maintain the quality of the medication and prevent misuse, it should not be transferred to other containers.
