Key information summary
Efficacy & effects
This medication is used to completely or partially reverse respiratory depression caused by narcotics, including natural and synthetic opioids, propoxyphene, and methadone. Dosage
Naloxone hydrochloride can be administered intravenously, intramuscularly, or subcutaneously. The fastest onset of action occurs after intravenous administration, and it is recommended in emergencies. 1) In case of known or suspected narcotic overdose (1) The initial intravenous dose of naloxone hydrochloride is 0.4 to 2 mg. (2) If respiratory function is not adequately offset or improved, it may be repeated intravenously at intervals of 2 to 3 minutes. (3) 10 m
Precautions
Since this medication is an injectable ampoule, there may be glass fragments when cutting the container, so care must be taken to ensure that glass fragments do not enter the body during use. Extra caution is especially necessary when used in children or the elderly. People with a history of allergy or hypersensitivity to this medication or its components should not use it. Additionally, it should not be administered to patients taking central nervous system depressants like barbiturates or those with respiratory depression. Patients with hypertension or heart disease and those with kidney or liver function problems should use this medication with caution, as it may affect the heart. This medication may cause side effects such as increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, nausea, vomiting, liver dysfunction, and, rarely, symptoms like seizures or convulsions. In cases of overdose after surgery, analgesic effects may diminish, or the patient may become agitated, necessitating caution. Patients with heart disease may experience cardiovascular adverse reactions such as hypotension or pulmonary edema and require monitoring. After administration of this medication, emergency measures such as airway maintenance, artificial respiration, and cardiac massage should be promptly undertaken. Patients with cardiovascular diseases should be particularly careful, and if pulmonary edema symptoms appear, drug administration should be immediately discontinued, and appropriate treatment should be received. This medication alleviates respiratory depression by reducing the effects of narcotic analgesics, but it may also reduce analgesic effects, so the patient's condition should be closely monitored after use. In patients with narcotic dependence or those suspected of it, administration can lead to acute withdrawal symptoms, so it should be used cautiously. For pregnant women, safety has not been established; it should only be used when the therapeutic benefits outweigh the risks. For nursing mothers, it is uncertain whether this medication is excreted in breast milk, so it is advisable to avoid administration if possible, and if necessary, to discontinue breastfeeding.
