This medication is used to treat and prevent infections caused by the herpes simplex virus affecting the skin and mucous membranes, including primary and recurrent genital herpes. It is also effective in treating shingles virus infections, particularly for alleviating pain during the acute phase. However, its effectiveness for postherpetic neuralgia has not yet been firmly established. This medication is also used to treat chickenpox in children over 2 years of age. It works effectively against various viral infections and alleviates symptoms.

Dosage and Administration

For immunocompromised patients.

Children's dosage

Precautions

This medication should not be used by patients who are allergic to it or its components. Caution is required when using this medication in patients with impaired kidney function, as mental adverse reactions may occur more readily. Patients with impaired liver function should also use this medication cautiously, as there is a risk of further deterioration in liver function. In infants and children, it should only be used minimally when absolutely necessary. Elderly patients are at higher risk for reduced kidney function, so caution should be exercised to prevent more pronounced side effects. Severe allergic reactions, such as anaphylactic shock, may occur, so if symptoms arise, the medication should be stopped immediately, and appropriate treatment should be sought. Skin reactions such as rashes, fever, blisters, and hives may occur, and use should be discontinued if these symptoms appear. Serious skin conditions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis may develop, so skin condition should be closely monitored. Mental symptoms such as confusion, hallucinations, seizures, drowsiness, anxiety, and insomnia may occur, particularly in elderly patients or those with diminished kidney function. This medication may affect kidney function, leading to renal failure or urinary abnormalities, so caution is necessary. Blood-related side effects may include leukopenia, anemia, and bleeding. Liver function abnormalities or symptoms of hepatitis and jaundice may occur, so liver status should be checked periodically. Gastrointestinal symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, and if these symptoms are severe, the medication should be discontinued. Generally, this medication is most effective when administered as soon as skin symptoms begin; for shingles, it is best to start treatment within 5 days, and for chickenpox, within 3 days. Adequate hydration is necessary during treatment, particularly when using high doses to prevent dehydration. Caution should be exercised during dangerous activities, such as driving or operating machinery, considering the possibility of altered consciousness. There may be interactions when used in conjunction with other medications, especially those affecting kidney function or specific drugs, so consultation with a specialist is advisable. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should carefully consider the risks and benefits of using this medication, and it is safest to discontinue use while breastfeeding. In cases of overdose, severe neurological abnormalities and kidney damage may occur, so if overdose is suspected, immediate notification to medical personnel is necessary. Elderly patients or those with impaired kidney function should use the medication with adjusted dosage and intervals.
