Precautions

This medication must be taken strictly as prescribed, as exceeding the recommended dosage can result in seizures. Patients with a risk of seizures or those with epilepsy should only use this medication when absolutely necessary, as there is an increased risk of seizures and caution is required. Long-term use may lead to psychological or physical dependence, so patients with a history of drug abuse or dependence should be treated under strict supervision for a short period. Taking this medication in combination with central nervous system depressants such as alcohol or benzodiazepines can lead to severe drowsiness, respiratory depression, coma, or even death; therefore, great caution is needed.

Side effects and when to seek care immediately

Serious side effects

This medication can interact with various drugs; therefore, dose adjustment and careful monitoring are necessary when taking other central nervous system depressants, antidepressants, anticoagulants, and similar medications.

Mild side effects

  • Patients with acute alcohol intoxication, those with central nervous system drug overdoses, severe respiratory depression, head injury patients, those taking MAO inhibitors, patients with severe renal or liver impairment, pregnant or nursing women, and those with specific genetic disorders should not receive this medication.
  • Careful administration is required when used in combination with morphine or for patients with liver or kidney disorders or those who consume alcohol, and close observation for seizure occurrence should be maintained in patients with a history of seizures.

Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.

Storage

Individuals who metabolize this medication rapidly genetically may have increased blood levels of active metabolites, elevating the risk of respiratory depression, so dose adjustment and monitoring are necessary. This medication should not be administered to children under 12 years old or to those under 18 who have undergone tonsillectomy or adenoidectomy, and caution is advised for children aged 12 to 18 with specific risk factors. When using ampoule injections, the container should be cut carefully to avoid introducing glass fragments, especially when administered to children or the elderly.
