Efficacy & effects

This medication is used to replenish sodium and chloride when the body is deficient in water and electrolytes. It also serves as a diluent when administering other injections, aiding in the dissolution and dilution of the injection. Thus, it improves electrolyte imbalance and supports the safe administration of injections.

Dosage

As sodium chloride, usually 20 to 1,000 mL is administered subcutaneously, intravenously, by intravenous drip, or rectally. The dosage and infusion rate should be adjusted appropriately based on age, weight, and symptoms.

Precautions

This drug should be cut very carefully when cutting the glass container to avoid mixing glass fragments, especially in young children and the elderly. This drug should not be administered to patients with hypernatremia, patients with excessive body water, and patients with edema and ascites due to liver cirrhosis. Patients with heart or circulatory problems, patients with reduced kidney function, patients with low blood proteins, and patients with abnormal sodium or potassium levels should use this drug with special caution. Administration in large volumes or at a rapid rate may cause side effects such as heart failure, edema, acidosis, and electrolyte imbalance. Infection, pain, thrombosis, and phlebitis may occur at the injection site, so caution is needed during administration. If adverse reactions appear, immediate cessation of administration is required, and the patient's condition must be assessed with appropriate treatment. If necessary, the remaining solution should be kept for testing. During the treatment period, the patient's fluid status, electrolyte levels, and acid-base balance should be regularly monitored to observe any changes in condition closely. The container for this drug is made of PVC material containing a plasticizer called DEHP, which may affect reproductive development in animal studies, but the risk in humans is virtually negligible due to minimal exposure. Therefore, the risk of not using this drug is much greater than the risk of DEHP exposure, so it can be used with confidence. Especially in the elderly, bodily functions may be decreased, so careful attention is needed to slow the administration rate and adjust the dosage accordingly. Before administration, check for any color changes or precipitates in the solution, and ensure that the patient's skin and injection equipment are thoroughly disinfected. In cold seasons, warm the solution to body temperature before use, and it should be used immediately after opening or mixing with other medications; any remaining solution should be discarded.

Side effects

Congestive heart failure, edema, acidosis, and serum electrolyte abnormalities may occur.
