How it is given
Adult administration
This medication should be stored in a sealed container to prevent air or moisture ingress. This will help maintain the effectiveness of the drug for a longer period.
Child administration
Store at room temperature and avoid direct sunlight for storage.
Precautions
This drug is an injection solution containing glucose, and rapid consumption of thiamine (Vitamin B1) occurs during intravenous administration, potentially leading to severe thiamine deficiency. It should not be administered to patients with lactic acidosis, fluid overload, storage dehydration, hypokalemia, or hypernatremia. Caution is required for use in patients with impaired kidney function, heart failure, diabetes, urinary obstruction leading to low urine output, severe liver dysfunction, or hyponatremia. Administration of this drug in large quantities or too rapidly may result in side effects such as cerebral edema, pulmonary edema, and peripheral edema, so care is needed. During administration, regular monitoring of blood glucose, serum electrolytes, and fluid balance status is essential.
Side effects and when to seek care immediately
Serious side effects
Before use, ensure the injection solution is completely clear, be careful to avoid injecting air into the container, and do not connect multiple containers for administration.
Mild side effects
Particularly in neonates, preterm infants, and low-birth-weight infants, blood sugar control can be challenging, leading to risks of hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia, thus requiring careful monitoring.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
Storage
Pregnant women, nursing mothers, women of childbearing age, newborns and children, and the elderly may experience slight leaching of a component called DEHP from this medication container, but the associated risks are considered very low, while the benefits of treatment are greater. In pregnancy, this medication should only be used when necessary, considering the potential risks to the fetus, and blood glucose changes in the mother and newborn should be closely monitored during administration.
