Used for cough associated with bronchial asthma, cold, acute and chronic bronchitis, upper respiratory tract inflammation, etc. It is also used to relieve nasal mucosal congestion and swelling.
How it is given
Adult administration
As ephedrine hydrochloride, 25 to 40 mg should be administered subcutaneously once, 1 to 2 times daily. Administered intravenously (I.V), intramuscularly (I.M), or subcutaneously (S.C), and when administering intravenously, it should be infused slowly, and may be repeated after 5 to 10 minutes if necessary. Do not exceed 150 mg within 24 hours.
Child administration
Do not exceed 3 mg/kg within 24 hours, and dosage and administration methods should be prescribed based on disease and treatment responses.
Precautions
This medication is provided in broken glass ampoules; therefore, when opening the container, glass shards may mix in, so extreme caution is required, especially when used for children or the elderly. This medication should not be used by individuals with certain conditions. For example, those with allergies to this medication or its components, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, diabetes, benign prostatic hyperplasia, certain tumors (pheochromocytoma), heart disease, and those taking or recently stopped taking specific medications (MAO inhibitors) should avoid administration. Also, careful administration is required for patients taking digitalis preparations, those with heart disease, children, those with hyperthyroidism, closed-angle glaucoma, and renal impairment. When using this medication, cardiovascular adverse reactions may occur, such as rapid or irregular heartbeat, chest pain, and increased blood pressure. Additionally, neurological symptoms such as dizziness, headache, trembling, insomnia, sweating, thirst, and weakness may also occur. Gastrointestinal side effects may include nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, and urinary disturbances may occur. If allergic reactions like skin rashes are observed, usage should be stopped immediately. In the case of overdose, psychiatric symptoms such as anxiety, hallucinations, and delusions may appear, and long-term use may lead to dependence or tolerance, so caution is necessary. The dosage and administration of this medication must be strictly adhered to, and it is recommended to discontinue use if there is no effect. Careful guidance on usage must be provided, and the condition must be closely monitored when administered to children. When used with thyroid medications, the effects of this medication may be enhanced, so dosage adjustments should be made. Caution must be taken to avoid concomitant use with certain anesthetics or other heart-related medications as this may increase the risk of cardiac arrhythmia. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should avoid this medication as it could affect the fetus, and nursing mothers should also avoid using this medication as it can be transmitted through breast milk and may cause side effects in the baby. Elderly patients may have reduced body function, so special caution, including dosage reduction, is necessary when using this medication. Generally, this medication is not used for intravenous injections or in ointment form, and it should be stored in a place that blocks light.
