To increase the effectiveness of dieting, it is better for women to exercise after eating, and for men to exercise on an empty stomach before eating.

 

Women's bodies tend to conserve carbohydrates. When exercising and eating, fat burning stops and the body focuses on conserving carbohydrates. If women need to eat after exercising, it's best to wait at least 90 minutes.

 

This is because fat burning occurs intensively for 90 minutes after exercise. In contrast, the male body prioritizes muscle preservation over carbohydrate storage. When exercising without an empty stomach, the body prioritizes muscle building with the carbohydrates consumed before exercise, rather than burning fat.

A research team at the University of Surrey in the UK asked one group to drink a carbohydrate drink before exercise and another group to drink a carbohydrate drink after exercise. The women who ate before exercise lost 22% more body fat, and the men who ate after exercise lost 8% more body fat.

 

There are also studies that have confirmed physiological activity. A research team at the University of Bath in the UK had male participants exercise, once on an empty stomach and once after a high-carbohydrate meal. After comparing blood and fat tissue samples collected multiple times, they found that when they exercised in a fasted state, the genes PDK4 and HSL, both associated with energy metabolism, increased. When they exercised after a meal, the levels of both genes decreased.

 

Meanwhile, it's also important to maintain a regular schedule for exercise and meals. Our bodies secrete hormones based on our habits, so establishing regular habits ensures that metabolic hormones are secreted at the right time, further enhancing the fat-burning effect. Irregular eating and exercise habits can lead to increased appetite or emotional instability.
