A nutritionist in the UK expressed concern about children eating processed meats for breakfast. Since processed meat consumption is associated with various cancers, caution is necessary.

On the 31st of last month (local time), according to the UK Daily Mail, the UK's chief nutritionist Federica Amati shared 'foods children should never eat for breakfast and alternatives.'

Dr. Federica Amati warned that children should not be given processed meats such as ham, sausages, and frozen chicken nuggets. This is because consuming processed meats high in sodium in the morning can lead to excessive water retention, raising blood pressure, causing dehydration, and resulting in decreased concentration.

Consuming processed meat increases the risk of developing cancer. Salt, food preservatives, and other additives used during processing cause imbalances in gut microbiota. N-nitroso compounds and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) produced during processing damage DNA and generate oxidative stress, leading to the formation of cancer cells.

According to a 2019 study by Oxford University in the UK, consuming more than 70 grams of processed meat per day increases the risk of colon cancer by 5%. 70 grams of processed meat is equivalent to two slices of bacon or half a hamburger.

Dr. Amati said that a suitable breakfast for children is a carbohydrate food with a low glycemic index (GI) and complex carbohydrates where more than three sugar molecules are linked together.

Dr. Amati said, "Sometimes parents are afraid of their children consuming carbohydrates, but in children, carbohydrates are quickly converted into energy in the body, so it is important to consume enough quality carbohydrates in the morning when energy is needed."
