A study has shown that consistent intake of protein by patients with type 2 diabetes can alleviate symptoms of depression.

Researchers including Maike M. Miguelbrink from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands analyzed the depressive symptoms and protein intake of 1,137 patients with type 2 diabetes. The researchers measured the presence of depressive symptoms using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scale. The PHQ-9 is a questionnaire that asks about nine items corresponding to the diagnostic criteria for major depressive disorder, with a total score of 27 points. Higher scores indicate more severe depression, and a score of 10 or above is considered indicative of depression.

As a result, it was found that the higher the total protein intake, the lower the PHQ-9 score. This is because essential amino acids in proteins are rich in neurotransmitters. The researchers stated that a protein diet helps to resolve neurotransmitter imbalances. Proteins are rich in the essential amino acid tryptophan, which is the building block of serotonin, known as the happiness hormone. Among proteins, tyrosine also serves as a precursor for neurotransmitters like dopamine that regulate emotions.

However, it was found that a higher intake of protein does not necessarily reduce the prevalence of depression. Additionally, whether the type of protein is plant-based or animal-based was not related to depression symptom scores.

Meanwhile, the results of this study were recently published in the international journal 'Preventive Medicine'.
