June 17th (Monday): Climbing stairs, a good exercise but... People weak in 'this area' should avoid it!!

If you have knee joint problems, climbing stairs may actually worsen your joint condition.

 

There are people who choose to use the stairs instead of the elevator for health reasons.

Climbing stairs consumes more energy than walking on flat ground, thereby increasing exercise effectiveness and improving cardiovascular function. It is also effective for strengthening lower body muscles, including the thighs. This helps increase overall muscle mass and prevent arthritis. Additionally, stair climbing is beneficial for increasing basal metabolic rate, enhancing endurance, and improving balance. Another advantage is that it does not require any special equipment, making it possible to do anytime and anywhere, just like walking.

People with knee joint problems should avoid stair climbing exercises. Continuing to put stress on the joints despite weakened knee strength increases the risk of developing arthritis. If your knees hurt when climbing stairs, it may already indicate weakened joint strength.

 

It is also advisable for elderly people with heart disease or impaired balance, as well as those who frequently experience anemia, to avoid climbing stairs. Straining to climb stairs when heart function is compromised can put stress on the heart, and if balance is impaired and leg strength weakens, falling on the stairs can lead to serious injuries. Anemia patients should also be cautious, as sudden shortness of breath or dizziness while climbing stairs can cause falls.

 

Climbing stairs should only be done until you start sweating slightly and become breathless enough to talk. If your thighs or calves hurt or you become extremely short of breath, take a rest, and after resting for about 5 minutes walking on flat ground, resume climbing. Elderly or those with health issues should avoid stair climbing as much as possible; if they must use stairs, they should hold onto the handrail and be accompanied by a guardian.
