This is a review of laser treatment received at the ophthalmology clinic.
I have had severe dry eye syndrome for a long time and have received various treatments.
My eyes have meibomian glands that tend to get blocked easily, so tear drainage was not normal, and I also had symptoms of excessive tearing.
I also tried probe therapy (opening the glands with a needle), but it only provided temporary improvement and the effect was minimal, so I received IPL laser treatment on the hospital's recommendation.
Yeongdeungpo Kim Eye Clinic is...
It is one of the top ophthalmology hospitals, with many cases of successfully treating numerous eye diseases.
I have suffered from many eye conditions, including not only dry eye but also dacryocystitis, keratitis, conjunctivitis, styes, and excessive tearing, and I have been receiving treatment at Kim Eye Clinic for a long time. My attending physician was Dr. Bae Gyeong-hwa, a specialist in tear duct diseases.
The doctor recommended IPL laser treatment, saying that I needed to get the dry eye condition treated first for the rest of the treatment to improve.
Isn't IPL a laser used to remove blemishes? A laser on the eyes?? Because of that thought, I was scared and wondered if it was even right to do it to my eyes, so I wasn't really keen on it at first.
The teacher's explanation that reassured me was,
They explained that my current condition isn't serious enough to require surgery, and that restoring meibomian gland function is the priority.
They explained in detail that since the tear glands have been treated to some extent with probe therapy, IPL laser treatment will now stimulate oil gland secretion to help improve dryness and tearing. It is the same equipment as an IPL for the skin, but I heard that the wavelength is set differently.
I heard that IPL laser treatment is effective and is widely used for dry eye syndrome, so I was convinced by the detailed explanation and decided to get the procedure.
The IPL laser treatment method is
First, apply a warm compress to your eyes with an eye massager, and
After applying anesthetic eye drops and cream, you put on a protective bandage and receive the laser treatment.
I was scared thinking they were shooting a laser at my eyes, but I received it while wearing a protective guard.
So it’s not scary and it doesn’t hurt.
Even though I had my eyes closed, the orange light of the furnace was flashing brightly—or rather, it was only warm enough that it wasn't even hot.
After the laser treatment is finished, apply a cold compress again, and
The teacher squeezes the meibomian glands.
It comes out so much that you can actually see yellow oil on the cotton swab... haha
Squeezing the oil glands was really painful at first, but by the second and third sessions, less oil came out and it didn't hurt anymore! It was amazing.
After squeezing the oil glands, a photo is taken, and the entire process is completed.
I took a picture with a cotton swab held to my eye, and that was harder than the laser treatment.
After the procedure was finished, I looked at the monitor with the doctor and listened to the explanation, and the changes after the treatment were definitely noticeable!!
There was so much oil at first!!
It decreased a lot while I was getting the procedure!!
This is a graph from a dry eye test.
The redder it is, the worse it is, and the greener it is, the better, but almost all the colors have turned green💚
After receiving 3 laser sessions, the progress was good, so I did not receive any additional procedures and currently only have regular check-ups scheduled.
Since this laser treatment isn't permanent, I'll have to keep monitoring the results, but I barely tear up anymore, and my dry eye levels have improved so much that I can actually feel the changes in my eyes. It was a surprise for me to think about getting IPL laser treatment on my eyes, and I was a bit scared at first, but once I actually received it, it wasn't painful at all and the results were so good that I am 100% satisfied. It's covered by insurance, so there's no financial burden either!
I am so satisfied that I wish I had just gotten laser treatment from the start.
I felt it was a meaningful treatment, especially in that it allowed me to manage the condition so that surgery was not necessary. 👍
