What kind of treatment does the dentist provide when the gums are swollen?

Hello.

My gums are swollen and slightly painful, but not severely. When I go to the dentist, how will they treat it? Will they just apply medication or prescribe medicine? It depends on the condition, but from what I can see visually, it doesn't seem too serious. I'm unsure whether I should go to the dentist or not.
