A summer delicacy... Enjoying 'this food' increases the risk of dental damage

여름철 별미인데… ‘이 음식’ 즐겨 먹다간 치아 손상 위험 ↑

Hot food

Summer health foods like ginseng chicken soup can potentially harm dental health if not careful. Soup that is hot enough to cause a burn can lead to cavities or sensitive teeth.

Especially in cases where the tooth arrangement is uneven

Those with dental prosthetics should pay even more attention.

If the arrangement of teeth is uneven, the broth can seep into the tiny spaces between the teeth. Since the broth is made by simmering meat, its main component is primarily oil. Therefore, the more irregular the teeth alignment, the more the broth adheres to the surface of the teeth, making it difficult to completely remove the residual broth from the tooth surface if brushing is neglected.

Additionally, the salt content in the broth's seasonings can increase the acidity in the mouth, leading to tooth erosion and cavities.

For those who already have cavities, hot broth can seep into the gaps and worsen the decay. In severe cases, each time the broth touches the nerve, a cold sensation or toothache may occur. The same applies to dental prosthetics made of gold or resin. Frequently consuming hot broth can lead to wear or deformation of the prosthetic. Therefore, to enjoy summer foods while maintaining dental health, proper brushing is essential.

Fruit

Fruits that are eaten refreshingly also contain high concentrations of sugar, which can cause cavities. When sugar remains on the surface of the teeth, cavities are more likely to develop. Cavities refer to the loss of calcium components inside the teeth caused by cavity bacteria. Since cavity bacteria feed on sugar and carbohydrates on the surface of the teeth, it is essential to brush thoroughly after eating fruit during the summer season.

Ice cream and frozen desserts

Hard ice treats enjoyed in summer also pose a risk of tooth fracture or sudden shape change due to chipping.

Unlike regular household freezers, commercial freezers store ice cream at temperatures lower than -20°C, making the ice cream even harder as the temperature drops. If you bite into the hardened ice cream stored for a long time, it can cause tooth fractures. Especially since children's primary teeth are very fragile, extra caution is needed. To protect dental health, it is recommended to eat soft ice cream and avoid ice-type frozen desserts whenever possible.
