Is it common to recommend extracting wisdom teeth even if they don't hurt?

Are wisdom teeth sometimes extracted even if there is no pain?

I went to the dentist because of my wisdom tooth, and even though it doesn't hurt at all, I was told it would be better to have it extracted in advance.

I naturally assumed that treatment was required if you were in pain, but I learned for the first time that there are cases where treatment is recommended due to the location, even if you are perfectly fine.

Has anyone had a tooth extracted without any pain?
Looking back now, I am also curious if you feel it was a good decision to remove it at that time.
