What do you call the thing that looks like the picture at the tip of the nail?

What was the name of the skin peeling that appears along the cuticle or underneath the nail in the photo? I can't remember the name. I think it's caused by a lack of nutrients, but I'm also curious about the cause.
It's not just me, my child has this problem too. It's gotten a little better these days, but I'm also curious about how to get rid of it.
