A woman in her 30s from the UK, who enjoyed fast food and gained weight up to 127kg, has shared her story of successfully losing 36kg through persistent effort.

 

According to foreign media outlets such as The Sun on the 10th (local time), Ratoja Ergotto (36) used to enjoy hamburgers, chicken, and other fast foods. Having gained weight up to 127kg while indulging in fast food, he realized he was seriously overweight after colleagues told him he was fat. He said, "My loose-fitting shirt shrank and tore, and I noticed that I had gained a lot of weight around my neck when I looked in the mirror." After that, Ratoja Ergotto decided to go on a diet and started managing his diet. He quit drinking alcohol, which he liked, and went swimming once a week as exercise. Successfully losing 36kg over a year, Ratoja Ergotto said, "I'm no longer afraid of meeting people," and "I now feel confident in my body."

 

Fast food is easy to cause obesity.

Fast food that Latoya Ergoto enjoyed is convenient, tasty, and popular. However, it generally contains a lot of fat and is heavily processed with sugar and salt, resulting in high calories. It can also raise blood sugar levels. The fats include not only healthy fats but also trans fats and saturated fats that can cause cardiovascular diseases. It also contains highly refined grains, starches, and sugar that significantly raise blood sugar. Therefore, fast food is prone to causing obesity. In fact, a research team from Dong-A University's Department of Food and Nutrition investigated 1,726 adults aged 20 to 39, based on the 2013-2014 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. They divided participants into three groups: those who consumed fast food less than once a month, those who consumed it 1 to 3 times a month, and those who consumed it at least once a week. The results showed that the more frequently fast food was consumed, the higher the body weight, waist circumference, and blood pressure. In particular, the group that ate fast food at least once a week had higher levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides, which can cause dyslipidemia, compared to the group that ate less than once a month.

Quitting alcohol = Alcohol is the enemy of dieting. Alcohol is a source of sugar, which accumulates fat in the abdomen and raises cortisol levels in the body, leading to belly fat. Cortisol affects fat cells in the body, inhibiting fat breakdown, because abdominal fat cells respond most readily to cortisol. Additionally, alcohol interferes with protein synthesis in the body, hindering muscle formation and maintenance, which relatively increases the amount of body fat. Therefore, quitting alcohol is the best method during a diet.

 

▷Swimming = Swimming is effective for dieting. When swimming, the body keeps moving to overcome water resistance, which burns a lot of calories. Additionally, swimming is a full-body exercise, so it provides the benefits of both aerobic and anaerobic workouts. In particular, swimming is recommended for overweight individuals. Overweight people put a lot of strain on their knees due to their weight, but swimming reduces the load on joints because of buoyancy in the water.
