If you want to lower your blood sugar, when is the best time to exercise?
 

The benefits of exercise vary slightly depending on the time of day you exercise.

 

Exercising in the morning makes me feel refreshed.

 

This is because the hormone adrenaline is secreted actively, and early morning exercise in particular stimulates this hormone. However, excessive morning exercise can actually be detrimental. In the morning, muscle and joint mobility are reduced, and enzyme activity involved in energy metabolism is reduced. A sufficient warm-up of at least 10 minutes is essential before a full-scale workout.

 

Evening exercise is effective and boosts immunity.

 

According to a study by the University of Chicago, evening exercise after 7 p.m. improves exercise efficiency. This is because adrenal cortex and thyroid-stimulating hormone are rapidly secreted during exercise around 7 p.m. This increases metabolism and increases the body's alertness, enhancing exercise efficiency. Moderate evening exercise can also promote the brain's secretion of melatonin and growth hormone during sleep.

 

Meanwhile, for blood sugar management, it is better to do it 'after a meal' rather than 'before a meal' regardless of the time of day.

 

To lower blood sugar levels two hours after a meal, it's effective to exercise an hour afterward. However, for those at risk for hypoglycemia, it's safer to begin exercising 30 minutes after a meal. Starting exercise two hours after a meal means your blood sugar levels have already risen significantly, making it too late to prevent vascular complications, such as those caused by frequent hyperglycemia.
