What does it do?

Tegafur belongs to the class of anticancer drugs and is primarily used to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. This ingredient is converted in the body to 5-fluorouracil, which exhibits anticancer effects.

Tegafur is metabolized in the body to the active metabolite 5-fluorouracil, which disrupts the DNA synthesis of cancer cells. As a result, cancer cells are unable to proliferate and die.

Approved uses differ by product. Check each product's information for its actual use.

Good to know

Tegafur is differentiated by its capability for oral administration as a prodrug of 5-fluorouracil. It is associated with somewhat fewer side effects and more convenient dosing compared to direct administration of 5-fluorouracil.
