What does it do?

Sulfamethoxazole sodium is an antibacterial of the sulfonamide class, used to treat bacterial infections in the eye. This ingredient is applied directly to the eye in the form of eye drops, acting at the site of infection.

Sulfamethoxazole sodium inhibits the synthesis of folic acid necessary for bacterial growth, thereby suppressing bacterial proliferation. This reduces bacterial infections in the eye and alleviates inflammation.

Approved uses differ by product. Check each product's information for its actual use.

Good to know

Unlike other antibiotics, sulfamethoxazole sodium acts by targeting the folic acid metabolic pathway of bacteria. As a result, it is effective against specific bacteria and, when used as eye drops, acts locally with relatively few systemic side effects.
