What does it do?

Levodopa is used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease as a dopamine precursor, converted into dopamine in the brain. It aims to alleviate motor disorders caused by dopamine deficiency. It is primarily administered as a combination medication with carbidopa.

Levodopa is converted into dopamine inside the brain, replenishing the deficient dopamine levels. This improves motor control, reducing symptoms like tremors and rigidity. Carbidopa enhances the effectiveness by preventing the breakdown of levodopa before it reaches the brain.

Approved uses differ by product. Check each product's information for its actual use.

Good to know

Levodopa is characterized by its conversion into dopamine in the brain, even though it is not directly dopamine itself. Due to numerous side effects when administered alone, it is used in conjunction with carbidopa to reduce peripheral side effects and increase efficacy. Unlike other dopamine agonists, it plays a role in directly increasing dopamine concentration in the brain.
