What does it do?

Ezetimibe is a drug that selectively blocks the absorption of cholesterol in the intestine. It is primarily used to lower blood cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases related to atherosclerosis. It may also enhance effectiveness when used in combination with statin medications.

Ezetimibe interferes with the process of cholesterol absorption into the blood from the intestinal wall. As a result, blood cholesterol levels decrease, reducing the accumulation of cholesterol in the blood vessels and slowing the progression of atherosclerosis.

Commonly used for

Approved uses differ by product. Check each product's information for its actual use.

Good to know

Unlike statins, which inhibit cholesterol synthesis, ezetimibe acts at the absorption stage. This results in a complementary effect when used in conjunction with statins, making it more effective in controlling blood cholesterol levels.
