What does it do?

Alginate is a natural polysaccharide extracted from seaweed, used to neutralize gastric acid and protect the gastric mucosa. It is included in medications to alleviate discomfort caused by excessive gastric acid in the gastrointestinal tract.

Alginate reacts with gastric acid in the stomach to form a viscous gel. This gel coats the gastric mucosa, protecting it and preventing gastric acid from directly contacting the mucosa, thereby reducing irritation caused by excessive gastric acid.

Approved uses differ by product. Check each product's information for its actual use.

Good to know

Unlike simple gastric acid neutralizers, alginate creates a viscous gel that physically protects the gastric mucosa. This makes it effective not only against gastric acid but also in preventing damage to the gastric mucosa.
