Improvement of hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia
This medication is used for the treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia and familial hypercholesterolemia (including heterozygous form), as well as mixed dyslipidemia. It is effective as an adjunct therapy when diet and exercise alone are inadequate. It helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by improving cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Therefore, this medication plays an important role in maintaining health through the management of blood lipids.
This medication can be taken at any time of day regardless of meals. The initial dose is 2.5 or 5 mg once daily, and if more reduction of LDL-cholesterol is needed, it can be adjusted to a maintenance dose. The maintenance dose is often adjusted to 10 mg once daily, which is sufficient for most patients, and should be adjusted appropriately based on LDL-cholesterol levels, treatment goals, and patient response at intervals of 4 weeks or more.
This medication should not be administered to certain patients. For example, it should not be used in patients with an allergy to any ingredient of this medication, severely impaired liver function, muscle disorders, patients taking certain medications concomitantly, patients with severe renal impairment, or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. This medication may affect liver function; therefore, patients with a history of liver disease or excessive alcohol consumption should have liver function tests conducted before administration and should be monitored periodically. Additionally, if certain conditions such as hypothyroidism or nephrotic syndrome exist, cause-specific treatment should be prioritized. This medication may cause musculoskeletal side effects such as muscle pain or muscle damage; hence, if symptoms such as myalgia, muscle weakness, or cramps occur, a physician should be consulted immediately. Special care is needed for patients with decreased renal function, the elderly, alcoholics, and those with a family history of these conditions. This medication contains lactose; therefore, patients with lactose intolerance should avoid its use. This medication may interact with other drugs; thus, it is essential to inform healthcare providers about any medications currently being taken, as co-administration with certain drugs can increase the blood concentration of this medication, heightening the risk of side effects. Women of childbearing potential should use adequate contraception and should not take this medication during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If this medication has been taken during pregnancy, it should be discontinued immediately and a healthcare provider should be consulted. There is no specific antidote for overdose, so treatment should be symptomatic, and liver function and muscle enzyme tests should monitor the condition. While taking this medication, dizziness or headache may occur, necessitating caution while driving or operating machinery.
