Essential hypertension: Telmisartan should be orally administered once daily at 40 mg with water and can be taken regardless of food. Depending on the patient, a dosage of 20 mg once daily may be effective. If necessary, the dosage can be increased up to 80 mg once daily, and dose increases show maximum blood pressure-lowering effects within 4 to 8 weeks after treatment initiation. Reduction of cardiovascular disease risk: It is recommended to take this drug orally once daily at 80 mg with water, and it can be taken regardless of food. The risk reduction effect on morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular disease at doses below 80 mg is not known. When starting treatment with this medication for cardiovascular disease risk reduction, monitoring blood pressure is recommended, and appropriate adjustment of antihypertensives may be required. ○ In patients with liver impairment Caution should be exercised in moderate to severe liver impairment, and the dose should not exceed 40 mg once daily.

This medication helps lower blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension to maintain cardiovascular health. It is also effective in reducing the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and mortality due to cardiovascular disease in patients over 55 years of age who are at high risk for cardiovascular disease and cannot use ACE inhibitors. Due to these properties, it improves cardiovascular health management in patients with a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, or high-risk diabetes. Therefore, this medication is used for essential hypertension and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

How to take

Precautions

This drug may cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn, especially during pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately once pregnancy is confirmed. This medication should not be used by individuals with allergies to this drug or its components, pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients with severe liver impairment, patients with hereditary angioedema, and those with certain kidney diseases. Elderly patients, individuals with high potassium levels, patients with liver impairment, those with valvular heart disease, gastrointestinal disease patients, renal artery hypertension patients, and those with severe renal impairment should use this drug with caution, and close monitoring by healthcare professionals may be necessary. During the use of this medication, various adverse reactions such as hyperkalemia, worsened renal function, low blood pressure, allergic reactions, and abnormal liver function may occur, so immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary if symptoms arise. Particularly, if symptoms of noticeably low blood pressure, dizziness, fainting, respiratory distress, or swelling of the face or lips occur, treatment should be sought immediately. This medication may lower blood pressure too much when used with other antihypertensives, so blood pressure, renal function, and electrolyte status should be regularly monitored when used in combination. Also, interactions may occur when taken with certain diuretics, potassium supplements, lithium, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), so it is essential to inform the physician or pharmacist before taking it. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not take this medication, and breastfeeding women are also recommended to discontinue breastfeeding while taking the drug. This medication is not recommended for children and adolescents (under 18 years of age) as safety and efficacy have not been established. In case of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, arrhythmias, dizziness, and renal impairment may occur, so suitable treatment should be sought immediately at a medical institution. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and it is advisable not to open the packaging until just before use. Caution is advised when driving or operating machinery as there may be a risk of dizziness or fainting.
