This medicine is used to help adult patients with type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar in conjunction with diet and exercise therapy. It is particularly effective in patients whose blood sugar is not adequately controlled, and caution is required when administering it to patients with concomitant cardiovascular disease. This medicine helps to improve blood sugar levels and is used to assist diabetes management and enhance overall health.

How to take

Adult dose

The recommended dose of this medication is 1 tablet, taken twice daily. The dosage should be determined considering each patient’s treatment regimen, efficacy, and tolerability, without exceeding 25 mg of empagliflozin and 2000 mg of metformin. For patients who do not achieve sufficient blood sugar control with metformin alone or in combination with other medications, treatment can begin with 5 mg of empagliflozin taken twice daily (total daily dose of 10 mg) along with their existing metformin dosage.

Precautions

This medicine can cause a rare complication known as severe lactic acidosis; thus, patients should consult a doctor immediately if symptoms appear. Caution is also necessary when used with other diabetes medications as this may result in hypoglycemia. It should not be used in patients with moderate to severe renal impairment. It should also be avoided in cases of acute renal issues, severe infections, or heart problems. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this medicine. Kidney function tests should be performed before starting this medication, and renal function should be regularly monitored during treatment. Use of this drug may be temporarily halted in situations posing a risk of fluid loss such as dehydration, vomiting, or diarrhea. It may increase the risk of urinary tract infections and genital infections, so any signs of infection should be reported immediately. Patients with impaired liver function must also use this medicine with caution. Patients scheduled for surgery should stop this medication 48 hours prior to surgery and can resume after renal function has returned to normal post-operation. Avoiding alcohol consumption during the period of taking this medication is recommended. Elderly patients or those with impaired renal function should take this medication with particular caution and may require dosage adjustments. Symptoms of hypoglycemia may appear while taking this medication, and immediate action should be taken if symptoms occur. Regular blood tests are recommended as blood levels of vitamin B12 may decrease. Regular testing should be conducted to check for adverse reactions, and if any abnormal symptoms occur, a doctor should be consulted immediately.
