Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used in conjunction with dietary and exercise therapy to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It is particularly used when adequate blood sugar control is difficult with monotherapy in patients who have not previously received diabetes drug treatment. It can also be used when control is insufficient with either metformin or sitagliptin alone, or when replacing combined treatment with both drugs. It is used as an adjunctive treatment when effects are insufficient when combined with metformin and other medications like sulfonylureas or thiazolidinediones. This medication also helps when blood sugar control is insufficient in combination therapy with insulin. It is indicated for improving blood sugar control in various conditions.
This medication is generally taken twice daily with food, and the dosage should be gradually increased to minimize gastrointestinal side effects caused by metformin. 1. Patients who are not currently being treated with metformin: The initial dose is 50/500 mg, taken twice a day, with one tablet per dose, and it can be increased as needed to 50/1000 mg, taken twice a day, with one tablet per dose. 2. Patients being treated with metformin:
This medication is a diabetes treatment that includes sitagliptin and metformin together. Serious allergic reactions may occur during the course of taking this medication; immediately discontinue usage and consult your physician if you experience symptoms such as rash, hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck. There is also a risk of acute pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas, so inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience severe abdominal pain, vomiting, or nausea. This medication should not be administered to patients with severely impaired renal function, acute heart failure, severe infection, or severe liver disease. In particular, this medication should be temporarily discontinued before examinations using iodinated contrast agents, and should only be resumed after confirming normal renal function post-examination. It is advisable for pregnant or potentially pregnant women, as well as nursing mothers, to avoid taking this medication. This medication can cause hypoglycemia; therefore, when taking it in conjunction with other blood sugar-lowering medications, be cautious of symptoms of hypoglycemia and dosage adjustments may be necessary. The metformin component can rarely cause a serious metabolic abnormality called lactic acidosis, so special care should be taken in cases of dehydration, severe infection, heart diseases, or liver function abnormalities. Furthermore, during the course of taking this medication, it is important to avoid excessive alcohol consumption and maintain regular meals and exercise, along with regular monitoring of blood sugar and renal function. Patients scheduled for surgery should discontinue this medication 48 hours prior to the surgery and only resume after the condition stabilizes and normal renal function is confirmed post-surgery. This medication has not been established for safety and efficacy in children and adolescents, so it is not used in this population. Elderly patients face a higher likelihood of impaired renal function, so renal function should be regularly tested and dosage adjusted when taking this medication. In case of overdose, visit a hospital immediately for proper treatment, and blood dialysis may be required. This medication may interact with various other drugs, so if you are taking other medications, be sure to inform your doctor or pharmacist.
