This medication is used as an adjunct to dietary and exercise therapy to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone or in combination with other medications. It is particularly important to use caution in patients with type 2 diabetes who have cardiovascular disease and whose blood sugar is not sufficiently controlled; it is crucial to refer to expert guidelines regarding the occurrence of cardiovascular events. Overall, this medication is helpful in improving blood sugar control and is useful in diabetes management.
The recommended dosage for this medication as monotherapy and in addition to other blood glucose-lowering agents, such as insulin, is 10 mg once daily. If the 10 mg dose of this medication is well tolerated and additional blood sugar control is needed, the dose may be increased to 25 mg once daily. This medication can be taken regardless of meals. The tablet should be swallowed whole. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered.
This medication should not be used in certain patients, such as those allergic to its ingredients, type 1 diabetes patients, patients with severely impaired kidney function, and those with genetic issues like lactose intolerance. For patients with slightly impaired kidney function, dosage adjustment is needed, and treatment should be discontinued in cases of severe kidney impairment. Additionally, this medication is not effective in patients with end-stage kidney disease or those on dialysis. In patients with mild to moderate heart failure, it should be used cautiously, and it is not recommended for patients with severe heart failure. The risk of hypoglycemia may increase when this medication is used in conjunction with insulin or insulin-releasing agents; therefore, dosage adjustments for those medications may be necessary. During the use of this medication, side effects such as hypoglycemia, urinary infections, genital infections, increased urination, fluid loss, etc., may occur, so caution is advised. Particularly careful monitoring is needed for elderly patients or those at risk of fluid loss. Furthermore, this medication can induce serious metabolic acidosis known as ketoacidosis, so if symptoms occur, immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary. Ketoacidosis can manifest as symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, and difficulty breathing. It is advisable to avoid using this medication during pregnancy, and breastfeeding women are recommended to stop breastfeeding. Safety and efficacy have not been established in children and adolescents, so they should not take this medication. No specific toxicity has been reported in cases of overdose, but appropriate management may be required based on clinical condition. Consider potential drug interactions when taking this medication, especially caution is needed when used concurrently with diuretics, insulin, sulfonylureas, etc. Lastly, when storing this medication, keep it out of reach of children and do not transfer it to other containers.
