Treatment of moderate to severe Alzheimer-type dementia symptoms
This medication is used to treat symptoms of moderate to severe Alzheimer's type dementia.
This medication should be taken once daily just before bedtime, regardless of food. The initial recommended dose of donepezil hydrochloride is 5 mg once daily. After administering 5 mg for 4 to 6 weeks and assessing the clinical response, it may be increased to 10 mg. Then, patients who have taken 10 mg once daily for at least 3 months may be prescribed 23 mg once daily.
This medication has donepezil hydrochloride monohydrate as the main active ingredient and is primarily used for treating symptoms of Alzheimer's type dementia. This medication should not be administered to certain patients. For example, patients who are allergic to this drug or its ingredients, pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, nursing mothers, and those with lactose intolerance or related genetic conditions should not take this medication. Patients with heart diseases, especially those with bradycardia syndrome or cardiac conduction disorders, should use this medication carefully as it can pose risks of heart problems such as bradycardia or arrhythmia. Patients taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or with a history of peptic ulcers should be cautious as symptoms may worsen due to increased gastric acid secretion. Patients with a history of asthma or obstructive pulmonary disease may experience worsening symptoms such as bronchoconstriction or increased mucus secretion when taking this medication. Patients with extrapyramidal disorders like Parkinson's disease may experience worsening symptoms due to the cholinergic effects of this medication; caution is necessary when administering it. This medication contains Yellow 4 (Tartrazine), so patients with hypersensitivity to this ingredient should also use it with caution. Taking this medication may result in serious side effects such as cardiac-related adverse reactions (e.g., bradycardia, heart block, myocardial infarction), gastrointestinal issues (e.g., peptic ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding), liver function impairment, neurological effects (e.g., seizures, extrapyramidal disorders), respiratory distress, acute pancreatitis, acute kidney failure, sudden death, so immediate consultation with medical personnel is necessary if any abnormalities occur. Additionally, relatively common side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, dizziness, insomnia, headache, and fatigue may occur, especially at higher doses. This medication poses a risk of arrhythmia to patients with heart diseases or electrolyte imbalances and those with a history of QT interval prolongation, so an electrocardiogram may be needed. Pregnant and nursing women are advised not to use this medication unless absolutely necessary, in which case a careful decision should be made after consulting a healthcare professional. Safety for children has not been established, so it should not be used in pediatric patients. This medication is metabolized in the liver, so caution is necessary for patients with impaired liver function, and they must inform their healthcare provider of any other medications they are taking, as interactions may occur. In cases of overdose, symptoms of toxicity such as nausea, vomiting, bradycardia, hypotension, and seizures may appear, requiring immediate emergency treatment. This medication should be stored out of the reach of children, and it is safest not to transfer it to other containers.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a tightly sealed container to prevent air and moisture from entering. It is advisable to maintain a storage temperature between 1 to 30 degrees Celsius.
