View approved original text

This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone as an initial treatment, and if a patient has no prior treatment experience and struggles with blood sugar control, it can be used in combination with metformin. Additionally, this medication can be used in combination when blood sugar is not adequately controlled with any one of sulfonylureas, metformin, thiazolidinediones, or insulin. It can also be used in situations where multiple medications need to be combined but blood sugar control remains difficult. Therefore, this medication helps improve blood sugar management at various stages of treatment.

Precautions

This medication can cause allergic reactions; if symptoms such as skin rash or difficulty breathing occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. If severe abdominal pain, a symptom of pancreatitis, occurs while taking this medication, notify healthcare personnel immediately, and discontinue medication if necessary. Patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis should not use this medication. Patients with impaired renal function need dosage adjustment of this medication, so regular kidney function tests should be performed, and it should be taken according to physician’s instructions. There is a risk of hypoglycemia when taking this medication, especially when used in combination with insulin or sulfonylureas; blood sugar levels should be monitored frequently, and symptoms should be carefully observed. If severe joint pain or blisters on the skin occur, notify a physician immediately and discontinue medication. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised to avoid using this medication, and safety and effectiveness in children have not been established. Elderly patients may require dosage adjustments and regular kidney function tests due to potentially reduced renal function. In cases of overdose, seek medical attention immediately because this medication can be partially removed by dialysis. This medication has fewer drug interactions; however, when used in combination with digoxin, blood concentration levels should be monitored. If any abnormal symptoms occur while taking this medication, consult healthcare personnel immediately.
