Blood sugar control in Type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication is used in conjunction with dietary and exercise regimens to assist adults with Type 2 diabetes in controlling their blood sugar levels. It can be administered as monotherapy, and if blood sugar control is inadequate, it may be used in combination with metformin, pioglitazone, sulfonylureas, insulin, or DPP-4 inhibitors. In particular, for Type 2 diabetes patients with cardiovascular disease, usage should be discussed with a specialist considering both blood sugar control and the impact on the occurrence of cardiovascular events. This medication helps improve overall blood sugar control and assists in diabetes management.
The recommended dosage for this medication is once daily 10 mg for monotherapy and additional combination therapy with other blood glucose-lowering medications including insulin. If the 10 mg dose is well tolerated and additional blood sugar control is needed, the dose can be increased to 25 mg once daily. This medication can be taken regardless of meals. The tablet should be swallowed whole. If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered.
This medication should not be used in certain patients. Individuals with allergies to the active substance or other ingredients should not take this medication. Patients with Type 1 diabetes or experiencing diabetic ketoacidosis should also avoid this medication. It is not administered to patients with severely impaired kidney function, those with end-stage kidney disease, or those undergoing dialysis. Additionally, as it contains lactose, patients with lactose intolerance or certain genetic metabolic disorders should not use this medication. Use with caution in patients with mild impairment of kidney function. If kidney function drops below a certain level, the dosage of this medication may need to be adjusted, or treatment should be discontinued. This medication is not effective in patients with end-stage kidney disease or those on dialysis. In heart failure patients with mild to moderate severity, this medication should be used with caution, and it is not recommended for patients with severe heart failure. When used with insulin or insulin secretagogues, there may be an increased risk of hypoglycemia; therefore, dosage adjustments of these medications may be necessary. Possible side effects of this medication include hypoglycemia, genital infections, urinary tract infections, increased urination, reduction in fluid volume, etc. Notably, hypoglycemia may occur more frequently when used in combination with insulin or sulfonylureas. Diabetic ketoacidosis, a serious metabolic acidosis, may rarely occur; if symptoms appear, immediate medical attention is required. Elderly patients or those at risk of fluid loss should be cautious for dehydration or low blood pressure, and this medication may be temporarily discontinued if necessary. Serious side effects such as liver damage or necrotizing fasciitis have also been reported, hence immediate consultation with a healthcare professional is advised if any unusual symptoms arise. Pregnant women are advised against using this medication, and breastfeeding women should also avoid taking it. The safety of this medication in children has not been established; hence, it should not be used in individuals under 18 years of age. No specific toxic reactions from overdose have been reported, but appropriate treatment may be required depending on clinical conditions. This medication may interact with other drugs, so inform your healthcare provider if you are taking any other medications. During treatment, take caution while driving or operating machinery due to the risk of hypoglycemia, particularly when used in combination with insulin. To use this medication safely, regular kidney function tests and monitoring for unusual symptoms are important.
