This medication is used as an adjunct to a diet for the treatment of elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apo B protein, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, while increasing HDL cholesterol. It is particularly used in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia in cases where other treatments are inadequate or inappropriate. When administering this medication, it should be accompanied by appropriate dietary measures and non-pharmacological interventions, and it is important to identify and treat secondary causes of dyslipidemia. For patients with acute coronary events, lipid testing is recommended upon admission or within 24 hours of admission. Overall, this medication is effectively used in treating dyslipidemia associated with hypercholesterolemia.

Precautions

This medication has been reported to cause rare side effects such as rhabdomyolysis, which can lead to severe muscle injury, and should be temporarily withheld or discontinued in patients who display serious myopathy symptoms or are at high risk for renal issues. Patients with allergies to any components of this medication, severely impaired liver function or active liver disease, existing muscle disorders, pregnant women or those likely to become pregnant, nursing women, or patients taking certain antiviral medications should not take this medication. Patients with a history of alcoholism or liver disease, impaired renal function, hypothyroidism, older adults, and those on certain medications should use this medication with caution and consult a physician immediately if muscle-related adverse symptoms occur. Adverse effects such as muscle pain, abdominal pain, and elevation of liver enzymes can occur during the use of this medication, and patients should inform their doctor if symptoms are severe or persist. Additionally, as this medication may affect liver function, regular liver function tests should be conducted before and during treatment, and administration should be immediately stopped if signs of liver damage appear. This medication may elevate blood sugar levels; however, the benefits of reducing cardiovascular disease risk are more significant, thus patients who require blood sugar management should discuss use with their healthcare provider. This medication should not be taken during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and women of childbearing age should use appropriate contraception. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been established in children and is therefore not recommended. Older adults are at increased risk for muscle-related side effects and should exercise caution when taking this medication. This medication has many potential interactions with other drugs, particularly certain antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, antihypertensives, and antihyperglycemic agents, thus dose adjustments and monitoring under a physician's guidance are necessary when taken together. There are no specific antidotes for overdose, so treatment should be symptomatic and managed through monitoring liver function and muscle enzyme levels. Dizziness or muscle aches may occur, thus caution is necessary when driving or operating machinery. Lastly, store this medication out of the reach of children and do not transfer it to other containers for safety.
