Improvement of lipids through cholesterol reduction and HDL increase in hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia
This medication helps to control cholesterol and lipid levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. It primarily lowers total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol while increasing the levels of HDL cholesterol, which is considered the 'good' cholesterol. It is used as an adjunct in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia when other treatments are ineffective. This medication is used in conjunction with dietary measures, and treatment of secondary causes and regular blood lipid testing are also important. This medication aids in the treatment of complex dyslipidemia, improving vascular health.
This medication is administered once daily, regardless of meals. For primary hypercholesterolemia, it is administered within a dosage range of 10/10mg to 10/80mg daily, with a starting dose recommended at 10/10mg or 10/20mg per day. For patients requiring significant reduction in LDL cholesterol, a starting dose of 10/40mg per day is recommended. After starting treatment or adjusting the dosage, lipid levels should be checked at intervals of more than two weeks before further adjustments are made.
This medication carries a risk of serious muscle issues. Patients with risks of renal impairment due to acute infections, hypotension, major surgery, or trauma should temporarily pause or discontinue this medication. This medication should not be taken by individuals allergic to the active ingredient or its components, those with liver disease or persistently elevated liver enzyme levels without known cause, individuals with muscle diseases, pregnant women or those likely to become pregnant, nursing mothers, patients taking certain antiviral medications, and those with genetic issues such as lactose intolerance. Patients with a history of alcoholism or liver disease, those with severe liver dysfunction, renal impairment, hypothyroidism, those with a family history or previous statin-related muscle toxicity, elderly patients over 70, and those taking certain drugs concomitantly should exercise caution. Possible side effects include myalgia, abdominal pain, and elevated liver enzymes; serious muscle damage, such as rhabdomyolysis, may occur rarely. If such symptoms arise, consult a physician immediately. Regular liver function tests should be conducted prior to and during treatment, and if liver dysfunction persists, treatment should be discontinued. This medication may raise blood sugar levels, so patients at risk for diabetes should monitor their blood sugar closely. Pregnant women or those planning to get pregnant should not use this medication, and women of childbearing age must use appropriate contraceptive methods while taking it. Its use is also not advised in breastfeeding women. Safety and efficacy in children have not been established, so it is not recommended for them. Elderly patients are at a higher risk of myopathy, so caution is needed, but dose adjustments are typically unnecessary. Patients with renal or liver function issues should consult their physician before taking this medication, especially if they have severe liver dysfunction. When taking this medication with other drugs, the risk of side effects may increase due to drug interactions, so any other medications being taken must be disclosed to a physician or pharmacist. Symptoms such as dizziness may occur when driving or operating machinery, so caution is advised. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, and treatment should monitor symptoms along with liver function and muscle condition.
