Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Blood sugar control disorders in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used in combination with dietary and exercise therapy to assist in blood sugar control for patients with type 2 diabetes. If blood sugar control is insufficient, it can be administered alone or in conjunction with oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin. Particularly, when there is no effect from sulfonylureas or monotherapy with metformin, this medication can be used in combination with metformin for more effective blood sugar control. Thus, the appropriate administration method is selected based on the patient's condition to improve blood sugar regulation.

How to take

Adult dose

Individual adjustment for each patient. Take without chewing with more than half a cup of water. Administer once daily orally. Should be taken before breakfast or before the first meal. It is crucial not to skip meals after taking the medication. The initial dose for monotherapy is 1mg of glymepride administered once daily, starting with 1 mg and increasing by 1 mg every 1-2 weeks. Generally, additional effects are seldom seen when dosages above 4 mg are administered.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes or those in diabetic ketoacidosis or coma. Additionally, individuals allergic to this medication or its components, those with severe liver or kidney dysfunction, and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take this medication. In cases of severe infection, pre- and post-surgery, or significant trauma, insulin therapy is recommended instead of this medication. Caution should be exercised during gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea or vomiting, as poor food absorption may increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Individuals with genetically predisposed lactose intolerance should not take this medication due to the lactose it contains. During the early stages of treatment, the risk of hypoglycemia is high, so elderly patients, those with poor nutritional status, or those who eat irregularly, and individuals who frequently consume alcohol should monitor their blood sugar levels regularly. Individuals with reduced kidney or liver function may also respond more sensitively to this medication, requiring dose adjustments. Furthermore, coexisting endocrine disorders or concurrent use of multiple medications may increase the risk of hypoglycemia, so caution is necessary. This medication can induce hypoglycemic symptoms due to its blood sugar-lowering action, which may present as headaches, severe hunger, dizziness, confusion, drowsiness, and in severe cases, loss of consciousness. If hypoglycemia occurs, ingesting food or drinks containing sugar should quickly raise blood sugar levels, and it is advisable to always carry sugar with you. Transient visual blurriness, gastrointestinal disturbances, abnormal liver function, changes in blood cell counts, and allergic reactions may rarely occur, so any abnormal symptoms should be immediately consulted with a healthcare professional. It is essential to take this medication regularly and follow a dietary and exercise regimen for optimal blood sugar control. During treatment, regular monitoring of blood glucose and urine glucose, as well as liver function, is necessary to check for drug efficacy and side effects. Particularly, during driving or operating machinery, there is a risk of decreased concentration or behavioral disturbances due to hypoglycemia, so caution is warranted. This medication may interact with various other drugs, so if you are taking other medications, it is essential to inform your doctor or pharmacist. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, it is recommended to use insulin therapy instead of this medication since it may affect the fetus or newborn. The safety of this medication in children under 18 has not been established, and care should be taken with dosage adjustments in the elderly due to possible decreased kidney function. In case of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur, and immediate treatment should be sought at a hospital.
